01What interviewers test on PAN-OS 12.1
The course kit groups Palo Alto interview questions into these areas. Interviewers like scenario questions, so practise the order of checks, not just the fix.
- Platform and packet flow: single-pass architecture, the management plane and the dataplane.
- Security policy: rule matching, the default rules, application-default and the rule actions.
- NAT: the pre-NAT address, the post-NAT zone, and the source NAT types.
- App-ID, Content-ID and URL filtering.
- Decryption: SSL Forward Proxy, SSL Inbound Inspection and exclusions.
- User-ID, GlobalProtect, and IPsec VPN with BGP.
- High availability, Panorama and Strata Cloud Manager.
- Troubleshooting: sessions, global counters and packet captures.
Three PAN-OS 12.1 changes worth knowing:
- IKEv2 is the default IKE version, so a peer that speaks only IKEv1 must be set explicitly.
- SSL Forward Proxy for TLS 1.3 accepts only the RFC 8446 groups X25519, X448, secp256r1, secp384r1 and secp521r1.
- From 12.1.2, a VM-Series needs at least 8 GB of memory, and VMs below 14 GB get lower session limits.
02Topic pages
Each page covers one topic, with fresher, experienced and scenario questions.
03Top questions
Start with these. Each link opens the full answer, with the commands that prove it.
- How does App-ID identify an application?App-ID · Fresher
- What does service application-default mean, and why not use any?App-ID · Fresher
- Custom application or application override: which do you choose?App-ID · Experienced
- How does Policy Optimizer help you move from port-based rules to App-ID rules?App-ID · Experienced
04How to practise
Answer each question aloud first, then read the model answer, then run the commands on a VM-Series firewall.
- Live course: Palo Alto NGFW on PAN-OS 12.1 is Ping My Lab’s live course with Radhe. Lab 6 covers App-ID and Policy Optimizer.
- Lab platform: most of Lab 6 runs on a free, unlicensed VM-Series in PNETLab. Policy Optimizer needs traffic logs, so that part uses the Azure pod.
- Exam too: Palo Alto certifications in 2026 maps each exam domain to the labs.
